#ThursdayWriteUp 5 – Want chips with that?

What I said last week: “I will be back to a normal writing schedule next week.” Two things wrong with that: 1. The road doesn’t afford a “normal” schedule for anything. 2. The words “back to a” shouldn’t be in that statement because that would be saying that I actually had a “normal” writing schedule at one point in my life. That said, here’s what I’ve been up to this week: The weekend was primarily spent trying to gain ground on non-writing commitments that have suffered because of travel, holidays and my fight against a healthy BMI. Even so, I was able to tap out a few more bullet points for “Bodies” and spent a fair amount of time staring at the wall rethinking some of the early chapters of “Boots”. In between those moments I prepared for some time on the road. Now, I could blame my failure to reach my 12,000 word goal this week on the fact that I forgot to bring the little plastic zipper bag of real coffee to replace whatever it … Continue reading

#ThursdayWriteUp 4 – Labor Day Lazy
avatar

Ah, what a week! Since Thursdays are my “Friday” normally, my #ThursdayWriteUp week began with a holiday. To the point, I didn’t work over the weekend. Not to say that I didn’t write. I just didn’t hold myself to hard expectations. I celebrated Labor Day by ignoring my white board, calendar, bullet lists and the little scraps of paper that take up the remaining 90% of my organizational toolbox. I boycotted structure and professional obedience. I allowed only artistic inspiration to lead me to the keyboard. Yep, I lounged on the couch, watched movies, and ate bad food for a couple of days. Don’t worry, I remembered to feed the cat. I was also able to take a few minutes to finish Rayne Hall’s (@RayneHall) “Six Scary Tales”. Expect a post about my thoughts on it in the near future (HINT: Buy it now.), but for now all I have to say is that Rayne definitely has a dark side. I’ll be starting the second book in that series in the next week or so. Amazingly, through … Continue reading

#ThursdayWriteUp 3 – On the road again!
avatar

It’s been one of those weeks where I have been busier than usual but with less time to work. It’s a bit difficult to type while blazing down the highway at 120 70mph! I was able to get a few things done on “Boots”. I’ve re-arranged two chapters and almost tapped out another two, at least in structure. Nothing but a bunch of notes and ideas for my non-fiction works this week. Being on the road was good for the project though, since much of it is based on my own observations of everyday life. (omitting the obvious jokes about all the interesting people you can meet while on the road.) That’s about it. A great week for face-to-face “research” with a little less desk work completed. Hopefully I’ll catch up on that part by next week’s #ThursdayWriteUp. What was your week like? Let me know in the comment section below and, if you’re on Twitter, every week at the #ThursdayWriteUp. I’d love to hear from you! Have a great week and thanks for spending time with … Continue reading

#ThursdayWriteUp 2 – Kindle-ing wood be my excuse
avatar

The clouds have retreated and the temperature’s dropped a bit. It’s that beautiful time of year when I get to switch the thermostat to “off” and have all the windows open by sunrise. Perfect weather for getting things done, and I’m not one to ignore that opportunity. I’ve had an enormously productive week! Well, sort of. I’ll go straight to word count: Um… a few. Somewhere between 2-3,000 (productive) words. As we all know, in reality, we actually tap out more than our final word count by the end of it all. (TypeTypeType – Highlight – DELETE!) That said, I didn’t actually do much deleting this week. My “tap count” was really that low. Why? Part of it can be blamed on the beautiful weather – perfect for home improvement type projects like this: The rest I will shamelessly blame on three new things I purchased this week: Pressfield’s “the War of Art”, Clare Davidson’s “Trinity” and my new Kindle (Yes, I finally joined the modern age this last weekend.) Yep. I’ve been reading more than writing … Continue reading

#ThursdayWriteUp 1 – Here goes nuttin’!

It’s that time again! Okay, the truth? This is my first time. Yep. I’ve not posted my weekly writing progress on my blog before. Not as a regular practice anyway. “So why the sudden urge to start a new habit?” Well, I was taking my usual 5 hour minute break on Twitter yesterday and got to thinking about what I was going to post for my #FridaySnippets (you’ll have to wait ’til Friday to find out) and I thought “Hey! I wonder if there’s anything out there in the writing community for Thursdays”. So I asked. Clare Davidson (@ClareMDavidson) answered the tweet and we found that we knew of nothing directly. I sat here scratching my head. Then brilliance struck! Not my brilliance, of course. This is not a work of fiction. It was the brilliance of Clare Davidson in the form of her next tweet: “@GRBliss Or better still, start something off like @cscruttwell and I did with #sentenceaday“ GENIUS! Long story short: We tossed around a few hashtags and decided on #ThursdayWriteUp to use as a … Continue reading
