#FridaySnippets 7 – “Bodies” (Clyde’s neighbors)
avatar

This week’s snippet is from “Bodies”. For the moment, this is the scene that introduces both characters involved. I’ve got a few other ideas bouncing around in my head for them, so I may change their entrance (at least for one of them) to an earlier point in the story.

FAIR WARNING: This is taken from the first creative draft (before any edits or corrections) so be ready for some rough writing! 😉

“Well Richard, why don’t you just go ask him?”

“And just what do you suggest I say to him when I show up out of the blue with no real reason to be there? Besides, he keeps his gate locked all the time now.”

Jane dropped 3 cubes of sugar, one at a time, in her tea-cup. “Does it really matter what you say? I mean, we’re neighbors! What’s wrong with a neighbor popping in to visit?”

“Should I take him some brownies or maybe a pie?”

“Oh, just stop it Richard! Why do you always have to be like that?”

“You know Jane, I can’t remember the last time I’ve ever gone over to Clyde’s just to visit. And I’m damn sure he’s never come over here just to be social. Hell, he only honked his horn at the end of the drive and pointed when he saw the water spraying out of our pump shed!”

Jane raised her eyebrows and shrugged without looking up from her cup. “He was probably in a hurry. Besides, it was just water. Nobody’s life was in danger. You should be thankful he even stopped for such a petty little thing.”

“So you think he’d have even thought of stopping if the runoff wasn’t flooding his drive?”

“See Richard, there you go being hateful again. Why are you always so hateful?”

Richard tore holes through her eyes with his own. “I don’t have time for this Jane. I’ve got things to do before sunup. I’ll go over there right now and tell him I heard a weird noise or something and then see what I can find out, will that do?”

“Do what you want. I have a breakfast date with the ladies anyway.”

Richard topped off his coffee mug and walked out the back door letting it slam behind him. “And I’m not going to fix the damper on that today, that’s for sure.” He mumbled as he headed down the gravel drive and across the road to Clyde’s place.

  1. This doesn’t bode well for Richard. I loved the tension in the dialogue, but would have liked to have seen a little more action interspersed with it. Nice intro to this couple 🙂

  2. I like how you describe everyday neighbour disagreements, a lot of people can relate to this! Your characters seem very real.

  3. DasteRoad says:

A nice way to introduce characters through an everyday argument. It would probably be better shorter and it’s a little meandering in places, but such is the way with first drafts, after all 🙂

  4. Funny scene. Liked the bickering 🙂
